My student daughter bought a Groupon coupon to the value of £107 so that she could take her boyfriend, me and my wife for a 2 course meal at The Olive Tree Leeds, (there are 3 Olive Trees to choose from in Leeds). My daughter and her friends have all used the Headingley restaurant before, they liked the food but the head waiter had been very offensive when they questioned the bill. We decided to use Chapel Allerton LS7 4NZ. The restaurant was quiet, the welcome very cold. The waiter from Headingley was there! We were seated in the window and given menus, when I said that we had a groupon coupon the menus were 'snatched away'. We were made to feel very unwelcome. We were given bright red cheaply printed, single sheet A4 size menus, there would be no doubt to any observers that we were using a coupon. My daughter is a vegetarian, she asked if she could have a £14 vegetable platter in place of her main groupon course, it was not possible? I managed eventually to get them to provide a platter, (After all I was willing to pay the extra for it). The food was mediocre and very very basic. My main was a small dry chicken breast with herbs, just a chicken breast. My daughters boyfriend and I shared her groupon main course (moussaka) to supplement our pieces of chicken otherwise there would have been insufficient food. All the food that we had had been pre-prepared and was similar, if not, microwaved frozen food, We had 4 drinks and 1-platter to pay for on top of the prepaid groupon coupon. The bill was an illegible scribbled mess, with a total of £37. I asked for someone to explain what exactly were the items that totalled £37. I knew I was being overcharged but could not decipher how. The waitress brought the young male waiter, I asked him to itemise exactly what I was being charged for, he waved his hand over the bill and mumbled 'it's all there'! Then turned his back to walk away, I said, “excuse me” he ignored me so raised my voice to repeat “excuse me” he totally ignored me again. I followed him to the bar, once again saying “excuse me could you please itemise the bill, he refused. I reached to borrow his pen that he had just put on the bar, He jumped back shouting “don't touch me, don't touch me” in a theatrical manner, I said “I have had enough of this, I'll get the police” I started to dial on my phone, the older waiter (from Headingly) took over, I wrote down the 5 items on the back of the bill that I was prepared to pay for, he was reluctant to price the items, he used the same line as the younger waiter, “it's all there”. Eventually after more raised voices and him questioning the younger waiter with what we had been served, he itemised my list. They were trying to charge me for 4 soft drinks totalling £12 that we had not had. I asked for a copy of the bill but was refused, they said they needed it for their records? (I took a photo of the bill). I find it very strange that I wasn't allowed a copy, Could there be a reason why they wouldn't supply one? Why are the bills made out in such an illegible way? The head waiter had allowed a big scene to develop, he was trying to embarrass me, maybe a more intimidated person would have just paid up. I was very angry but kept control, as I left the restaurant I made an announcement to the customers, I apologised for the scene that had been caused by the waiters and warned them to check their bills. That gesture at least made me and my party feel a little better. I contacted George Psarias the co-owner the next day. He said he was sorry, he admitted that he had problems with waiters writing illegible bills, he had spoken to them about it, He boasted that they had recently won another award and was soon to be featured on a program on ITV and added that he could do without any negative publicity. He said he would send an email letter of apology, and a voucher for my family to have a meal, gratis. I have since found out that the 'illegible bill scam' has been used on other people. It is now 4 days after my call and no apology. I am not concerned about the promise of a free meal, I think it is more important that people should know about this experience. Be warned. If you do not want to be overcharged for a paltry meal don't go to The Olive Tree, and if you do have a groupon coupon be prepared for inferior food and service. In fact after our experience I would recommend that you DO NOT GO with or without a Groupon coupon.
